Bold choice for Aiken theatre
The Aiken Community Playhouse's Youth Wing should be commended for their production of The Laramie Project, which opens Friday.
The show, about the aftermath of the gay-hate-crime murder of Matthew Shepard 10 years ago, isn't what you'd expect a youth wing to perform, and certainly not in Aiken. I've seen pieces of the show, and the kids are doing an amazing job with the controversial subject matter.
From wikipedia: The Laramie Project is a play by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project about the reaction to the murder of Shepard. The play draws on hundreds of interviews conducted by the theatre company with inhabitants of the town, company members' own journal entries and published news reports. It is divided into three acts, and eight actors portray more than sixty characters in a series of short scenes
If you have even half an interest in some live theater, check it out. You certainly won't forget it anytime soon. And at $8 for adults and $5 for students, it's a cheap night out. And, hey, ACP is in downtown Aiken, right next to Pizza Joint and the best nightlife in town.
